Hidden Parks of San Diego

Let’s talk about some of San Diego’s best kept secrets!

Everyone knows that San Diego is known for its beautiful parks and outdoor spaces. But, while some parks are well-known and popular among tourists and locals, there are also hidden gems that offer a more secluded and tranquil experience.

Here are a few hidden parks in San Diego that you might enjoy:

Marian Bear Memorial Park:  Not far from La Jolla and tucked away alongside highway 52 East, stretching from Interstate 5 to Interstate 805 in San Clemente Canyon is Marian Bear Memorial Park. The park provides a natural setting amid a bustling urban area. The 467 acres of dedicated natural parkland includes finger canyons and mesas on the south side with a rich and diverse history. This park offers scenic trails for hiking and biking. It's a peaceful retreat where you can enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife.

Villa La Jolla Park: Located in the La Jolla neighborhood, this small park is often overlooked but provides a quiet space for picnicking and relaxation. Villa La Jolla in La Jolla has a playground. It features a walking-hiking trail, a large grassy area, ball fields, a full-court basketball court, and volleyball.

Mount Soledad Park: Situated on top of Mount Soledad in La Jolla, this park offers panoramic views of San Diego and the coastline and is approximately a mile from La Jolla Bay. It's a perfect spot for a picnic or a peaceful stroll, and it's less crowded compared to other popular viewpoints in the city.  The Park is home to the Mount Soledad National Veterans Memorial, and it sits within Soledad Park. It can be accessed on foot, by bike, or by car. Soledad Park Road loops around the historic Mount Soledad National Veterans Memorial, which was provided by the Mount Soledad Memorial Association. The memorial originally comprised a simple cross made of redwood, but today a large white cross tower over brick steps and black granite plaques. There are currently more than 4,000 of these plaques, and each is dedicated to a veteran.  Some of them honor veterans who served as far back as the Revolutionary War.

Pepper Grove Park: Hidden within Balboa Park and named for the numerous Pepper Trees that provide shade to the picnic area, the popular Pepper Grove Park offers a serene atmosphere away from the main attractions. It features beautiful gardens, shady trees, and benches where you can sit and unwind and an extensive playground for children.

Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve: While not exactly hidden, this expansive park in the northern part of San Diego is often overlooked by tourists. It boasts miles of trails, a waterfall, and diverse wildlife, providing an immersive nature experience. It’s just a short distance from the city, but it feels much more isolated, especially compared to other San Diego hikes that have vistas overlooking subdivisions. The only evidence of civilization will be a few houses dotting the ridges and the occasional sewer vent along the trail.

Remember to always check the park's operating hours and any specific regulations or restrictions before visiting. Enjoy exploring these hidden parks in San Diego!
